Every person has places that are close to their heart. It can be the town where we were born, the street where we grew up, or a village where we spend holidays with our grandparents. These places are connected with memories, family and friends, and they form an important part of who we are.

People also love to discover new places. Some prefer big capital cities full of life, museums and shops, while others look for peaceful countryside, mountains or lakes. Slovakia may be a small country, but it offers an amazing variety of castles, caves, spas and national parks.

Visiting new countries and cities broadens our horizons. We try local food, hear foreign languages and learn how other people live. That is why travelling and getting to know new places is one of the most popular free-time activities today.

1. Which places are important in your life?

The most important place in my life is my hometown, because my family and most of my friends live there. I know every corner of it: my primary school, the park where I learned to ride a bike, and the square where we meet after school. Another special place is my grandparents' village, where I spend part of every summer. Life there is slower and I can really relax and switch off. Finally, I have to mention our school, because I spend most of my day there. These places are important to me because they are connected with strong memories and the people I love.

2. What would you show a foreign tourist in your town or region?

If a foreign tourist visited my town, I would first take them to the historical centre with its old houses, church and main square. I would explain the history of the town and show them the local museum. Then we would try some traditional Slovak food in a good restaurant, for example bryndzové halušky, because tasting local cuisine is the best way to get to know a country. In the afternoon we could go on a short trip to the surrounding countryside, visit a castle ruin or walk along a marked hiking trail. I would try to be a good tourist guide and answer all their questions.

3. What tourist attractions can visitors see in Slovakia?

Slovakia is full of interesting places. We have more than a hundred castles and chateaux. The most famous ones are Spiš Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, Bojnice Castle with its romantic towers, and Orava Castle high above the river. Visitors also love our caves. Some of them, like the Dobšinská Ice Cave, are on the UNESCO list. People who want to relax can visit world-known spas such as Piešťany or Bardejov, where mineral water is used to treat health problems. Nature lovers go hiking in the High Tatras, our highest mountains, or visit the waterfalls of Slovak Paradise. Every region offers something special, from wooden churches in the east to vineyards in the south.

4. Which places do people visit to relax and which to socialise?

When people want to relax and recharge their batteries, they usually look for quiet places. They go for a walk in a park or forest, spend a weekend in the mountains, sit by a lake or visit a spa and wellness centre. Silence and nature help them forget about work and school. On the other hand, when people want to socialise and meet friends, they choose lively places: cafés, restaurants, shopping centres, cinemas or sports grounds. Young people often meet in the town centre or at concerts and festivals. I think we need both types of places. Too much noise is tiring, but staying alone all the time is not healthy either.

5. Do you prefer living in a city or in the countryside?

Both lifestyles have their advantages and disadvantages. A big city offers better job opportunities, schools, hospitals and entertainment. Everything is close, and public transport works day and night. However, cities are often crowded, noisy and polluted, and flats are expensive. Life in the countryside is calmer and cheaper, people know their neighbours and children grow up surrounded by nature. The disadvantage is that villagers often have to commute to work or school and there are fewer services. Personally, I would like to live in a smaller town near a big city, because it combines the best of both worlds: peace at home and city life within easy reach.

6. Describe your dream place.

My dream place is a small house by the sea somewhere in the south of Europe, for example in Croatia or Italy. I imagine a terrace with a beautiful view of the water, where I could have breakfast every morning and listen to the waves. The house would be in a small town with friendly people, a market with fresh food and narrow old streets. The climate would be warm, so I could swim from spring to autumn. I know it is just a dream for now, but I believe that if I work hard and save money, one day I might spend at least my holidays in a place like this.

7. Which famous cities would you like to visit and why?

There are many cities on my bucket list. In Europe, I would love to visit London, because I could practise my English and see famous landmarks like Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the British Museum. I am also attracted to Rome with its ancient monuments such as the Colosseum.

Outside Europe, my biggest dream is New York. I want to see the Statue of Liberty, walk through Central Park and feel the atmosphere of a city that never sleeps. Every famous city has its own character, and I think seeing them with your own eyes is completely different from watching them in films.

8. How does tourism help and harm popular places?

Tourism has two faces. On the positive side, it brings money to the local economy and creates jobs in hotels, restaurants and shops. Thanks to tourists, many historical buildings are repaired and small towns stay alive. Visitors also spread the good name of the country abroad.

On the negative side, too many visitors can damage the places they love. This problem is called overtourism. Streets are crowded, prices grow, and locals sometimes cannot afford to live in their own towns. Nature suffers too, because thousands of feet destroy paths in the mountains and leave litter behind. That is why we should travel responsibly: respect local rules, protect nature and support local businesses.
