Past Perfect Simple vs Continuous (predminulý čas jednoduchý a priebehový)

Past Perfect Simple had + minulé príčastie She had finished the book.
Past Perfect Continuous had + been + sloveso s -ing She had been reading for two hours.

  • He had run 10 kilometres before he stopped. (Zabehol 10 kilometrov, kým prestal.) — dôraz na výsledok (10 km)
  • He had been running for an hour before he stopped. (Bežal hodinu, kým prestal.) — dôraz na trvanie (hodinu)

Príklad 2: Učenie

  • She had learned all the vocabulary before the test. (Naučila sa všetky slovíčka pred testom.) — hotovo, všetko naučené
  • She had been studying for hours before the test. (Učila sa niekoľko hodín pred testom.) — dôraz na dlhé učenie

Príklad 3: Čakanie

  • I had already waited when they arrived. (Už som čakal, keď prišli.) — fakt, stav
  • I had been waiting for 30 minutes when they finally arrived. (Čakal som 30 minút, keď konečne prišli.) — dôraz na frustráciu z dlhého čakania

Tipy & triky

1. Dokončená činnosť pred inou minulou udalosťou

  • She had left before I arrived. (Odišla predtým, než som prišiel.)
  • They had eaten dinner when we got there. (Keď sme tam prišli, už mali zjedenú večeru.)
  • By the time the ambulance came, the man had died. (Kým prišla záchranka, muž zomrel.)

2. Počet alebo množstvo pred určitým bodom

  • He had visited five countries before he turned 20. (Navštívil päť krajín predtým, než mal 20.)
  • She had read the entire book by lunchtime. (Do obeda prečítala celú knihu.)

3. S „already", „just", „never", „yet"

  • I had already heard the news. (Už som tú správu počul.)
  • He had never seen snow before that day. (Pred tým dňom nikdy nevidel sneh.)

Kedy použiť Past Perfect Continuous

1. Trvanie činnosti pred inou minulou udalosťou

  • She had been working at the company for ten years when she got promoted. (Pracovala vo firme desať rokov, keď ju povýšili.)
  • They had been living in London for five years before they moved to Paris. (Žili v Londýne päť rokov predtým, než sa presťahovali do Paríža.)
  • He had been driving for six hours when he finally stopped for a break.

2. Príčina minulého stavu — vysvetlenie „prečo"

  • She was tired because she had been studying all night. (Bola unavená, pretože sa celú noc učila.)
  • The ground was wet because it had been raining. (Zem bola mokrá, pretože pršalo.)
  • His eyes were red because he had been crying. (Mal červené oči, pretože plakal.)

3. Opakované činnosti v období pred minulou udalosťou

  • I had been going to the gym regularly before I injured my knee. (Pravidelne som chodil do posilňovne, kým som si nezranil koleno.)
  • She had been taking piano lessons for years before she gave her first concert. (Brala hodiny klavíra roky, predtým než mala prvý koncert.)

Porovnanie v tabuľke

Situácia Past Perfect Simple Past Perfect Continuous
Dokončenie I had written the essay. (hotový) I had been writing the essay. (proces, nemusel byť hotový)
Počet She had called him three times. nepoužíva sa na počet
Trvanie I had known her for years. (stative verb) I had been waiting for an hour.
Príčina stavu He failed because he hadn't studied. He was tired because he had been working.

Tipy & triky

Pri niektorých slovesách (live, work, study, teach) môžete použiť oba časy bez výraznej zmeny významu:

  • He had lived in London for five years. = He had been living in London for five years.
  • She had taught at the school for ten years. = She had been teaching at the school for ten years.

  • I had known her for years. (nie: *I had been knowing her)
  • He had owned the house since 1990. (nie: *He had been owning the house)
  • She had loved music since she was a child. (nie: *She had been loving music)

Časté chyby

  • Continuous na vyjadrenie počtu: *I had been reading three books before the exam. — pri počte použite simple: I had read three books.
  • Simple namiesto continuous pri zdôrazňovaní trvania: *She had studied for five hours before she took a break. — ak chcete zdôrazniť trvanie: She had been studying for five hours.
  • Continuous so stative verbs: *They had been knowing each other for years. — správne je: They had known each other for years.
  • Zabudnutie na „been": *She had working all day. — správne je: She had been working all day.

Zhrnutie
